Meet the Quartet

Robert Jospé is a distinguished American drummer, percussionist, composer and educator known for his versatile style and contributions to jazz and world music. Born on April 17, 1950, in Manhattan, New York City, Jospé grew up in a musically rich environment, which fueled his passion for drumming from an early age. He honed his skills through formal education and personal exploration of various musical genres.

Band leader of the Robert Jospé Trio and Quartet, Robert is nationally known for his eight CDs as leader, receiving two four-star reviews in Downbeat Magazine, reaching #4 twice on JazzWeek national radio chart and being featured in Jazztimes Magazine and Modern Drummer. Robert has been a touring artist and educator with the Virginia Commission for the Arts for 32 years. Robert joined the University of Virginia’s music department in 1989 and is currently Lecturer of Groove Percussion in the academic faculty. Jospé teaches jazz drumming and a hand drumming/rhythmic fluency course “Learn to Groove”. He is a member of UVA faculty jazz ensemble, The Free Bridge Quintet.

Throughout his career, Robert Jospé has been celebrated not only for his technical proficiency and creativity as a drummer but also for his contributions to music education and his role in promoting jazz and world music. He continues to perform, teach, and inspire, leaving an indelible mark on the world of music.

Daniel Clarke (piano) is a multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/producer/teacher born and raised in Richmond, VA. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Jazz Studies program, Daniel has anchored Richmond-based groups such as Modern Groove Syndicate, the Devil’s Workshop Big Band and Neighborliness, and has gone on to perform and record all over the world. His playing has been heard everywhere from the White House to the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Daniel’s eclectic and prodigious musicianship can’t be contained by one specific genre. His ear for quality has made him a sought-after collaborator by artists such as k.d.lang, Ryan Adams, The War on Drugs, Mandy Moore, Jason Mraz, René Marie, and countless others spanning all genres. He released the 7” single “Diamonds” on Ryan Adams’ Pax Am label in 2015. Daniel has also served as the Music Director for SPARC’s Live Art, a program at the leading edge of arts education, integrating performing arts curriculum with special education to create a unique and powerful program for students of all abilities.

Paul Langosch (bass) began his studies on the double bass in 1969 with Albert Webster of the National Symphony and later continued private lessons with William Vaughn, also of the National Symphony. He began his college studies at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD, later attending American University in Washington, DC and the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL. Paul has worked with many of the leaders in the jazz world including: Phil Woods, Tal Farlow, Al Cohn, Mose Allison, Johnny Hartman, Bud Shank, Zoot Sims, Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis.
