One of Massanutten Regional Library’s Big Read goals is to broaden our understanding of ourselves and our neighbors. “The Color Purple” is a powerful story of resilience with African American women at its center, and it explores themes also found in their chosen Big Read book, Yaa Gyasi’s “Homegoing.”

A story of love and resilience based on the novel and the Broadway musical, THE COLOR PURPLE is a decades-spanning tale of one woman’s journey to independence. Celie faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.
